One of the most picturesque locations of inland Chania is the small village of Theriso 16km from the city center. At the end of an amazing road that penetrates the scenic 6 km, Thériso gorge ends at a height of 580 meters on the feet of the White Mountains where the traditional village of Thériso was built.

The road to get there is on its own a very good reason to get to the mountainous village. It is flanked by a tree-lined river and is surrounded by the greenery of chestnuts, oaks & countless herds of feasting free-range goats.

The favorite destination of local hikers, cyclists & climbers is also a place of historical importance since it was here that the grandest of all the modern Greek statesmen & politicians started 1905 the revolution that would finally unite Crete with Greece, mainly due to the village’s inaccessibility & enclosure by the surrounding mountains.

Today the house of his mother still stands as a historical remnant along with his statue in the village square, among dozens of traditional old houses & taverns where you can find the most traditional Cretan dishes cooked “the old way”, exactly as the authentic Cretan owners have used to for generations.
