Stortorget

Stortorget square on the island of Gamla Stan (Old town) is the heart of the historic part of the capital. The main tourist hive of Stockholm is the historic axis around which, all sociopolitical life evolved through the centuries. It’s only natural to start your tour of the city from this place.

Formed during the very first years of the city (11th to 13th century), the stage of the horrific bloodbath in 1520, the site of the city hall until 1732, of the stock exchange a few years later (the Stock Exchange was housed in the Börshuset, the building that was erected on the site of the old city hall and continued to operate as such until 1990 when it became the home of the Nobel Prize Museum of Stockholm), this square oozes with history and great architecture and is, of course, an ideal starting point of any Stockholm expedition.
