Viking Ship Museum

Right next to the Norsk Folkemuseum, actually serving as a separate part of it is the Viking Ship Museum of Oslo. The Museum houses one of the most elaborate & best preserved Viking ships in the world, the Oseberg ship that will astound you with its detailed wooden carvings, eloquent advocates of its characterization as one of the best archaeological finds of the Viking Age. The museum also holds in its collection two more ships, a horse cart, sledges, wood carvings and several other artifacts in one of the most impressive collections of the Viking civilization in the world.

The Viking Shipyard is now closed for redevelopment. After 95 years of operation, the Viking Ship House has closed its doors – and will be resurrected in a completely new guise when we reopen as the Viking Age Museum in 2026.

Ever since the museum opened in 1926, the Viking Ship House has been a national symbol and gathering place for Norway’s most important cultural heritage. For almost 100 years, the Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune og Borre shipwrecks have taken in visitors from all over the world.

It has been absolutely essential to build a new museum to secure the cultural heritage for future generations. The new museum will ensure optimal conditions for the objects and at the same time give the public a unique encounter with the Viking Age.
