Kosciol Mariacki
Another important landmark on the east corner of the Main Market Square, the Church of the Virgin Mary Kosciol Mariacki. The church was built in the beginning of the 13th century in Romanesque style. It was rebuilt in the beginning of 14th century in early Gothic style. It was remodelled in the 18th century in Baroque and redone in neo-Gothic in the late 19th century.

The exterior of the Gothic 13th century Church with the distinctive red brick & the two towering turrets overlooking the Main Square, striking as it is, cannot really prepare you for the breathtaking beauty of its artful interiors.
Standing 13 meters tall & 11 meters wide, the Giant Gothic altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, Europe’s greatest sculptor of the period (1477 – 1489) is a true masterpiece renowned allover the world. Plundered & transported to Berlin by the Third Reich it managed to return safely home after the war. The murals were done by famous Jan Matejko during a 1888-1891 renovation. Every hour a trumpet signal played from the top of the taller tower is abruptly stopped to remind the trumpeter who signaled the Tatar invasion in the 13th century and was shot dead on that same tower.The climb to its 82-meter high & 239 steps will definitely reward you with its panoramic view of the city. More
