Kongens Have
Kongens Have, the King’s Garden has been open to the public since the 1770s and is today a popular breathtaking attraction for many Copenhageners and tourists. The garden is visited every year by approx. 3 million people flock to the green oasis for various reasons ranging from private picnics to organized and public events.
The place’s history began in 1606 when Christian 4 bought a piece of land outside of Copenhagen’s northeastern ramparts. Here he built what later became Rosenborg Castle and set up a garden. The garden was supposed to serve the courthouse at Copenhagen Castle with fruit and vegetables and act as a garden for the king.
The garden was formed as a walking ring where the king could also entertain his guests. Today the King’s Garden is Denmark’s oldest royal garden and is a popular place for Copenhageners to meet and relax and for children to play in the artistic playground.
Among the attractions to be enjoyed here are the impressive herbaceous borders, numerous historical sculptures, and Krumspringet [ ‘The Caper’) – a restored Renaissance park with a pavilion, espaliers, and rose gardens. More
