Mpoureki
Mpoureki. In the list of main dishes, one must certainly distinguish Mpouréki . In the region of Chania mpoureki is a vegetable specialty consisting of layers of potatoes, zucchini, or pumpkins, of the favorite cheese of Western Crete, the mizithra (hopefully you’ll become a fan of it before you leave this place), and finally, a topping of a crust made of flour, olive oil, salt, and wine, sprinkled with a bit of sesame & baked in the oven for about 15 minutes.
It is a very old recipe passed from mother to daughter & mainly preferred during the summer months when the courgettes are fresh from the house garden. Definitely one of the most popular dishes in western Crete. Many variations can be found throughout the island but this is the local favorite.
