Prophitis Elias

There is no better place for one to marvel at the natural beauty of this city than the hill of Prophitis Elias. The hill overlooking the bay of Chania is the perfect panorama platform for a photo that can be placed on the cover of your Chania album. The place is also the burial ground of the modern Greek founding father Eleftherios Venizelos who played a crucial role in the formation of the Greek state & the unification of the island with the rest of the country.

It is also the location of the temple of Prophet Elias built by the Venetians & destroyed during the bombing attacks of the Great Powers at the beginning of the 20th century but was later reconstructed. During the last revolution of 1897, the Cretan Revolutionary Camp was stationed on this hill. It was here that legendary revolutionary figures like Spyros Kagiales whose statue stands proud today committed heroic feats in their attempt to stand their ground against the Ottomans & the Great Powers. This site is a landmark for every citizen in Chania & a great place to sit, relax & sip a cup of coffee in one of the great cafes around it.
