Maritime Museum of Crete

The Maritime Museum of Crete created in 1973 is housed next to the Firka fortress at the western end of Venetian harbor. The location is of great historic importance for the whole island as it was here that the Greek flag was raised for the first time, signaling the long-anticipated unification with the rest of the Greece.

The Firka building (1629) houses today a collection of several models of ships, nautical instruments, paintings, historical photographs & war relics in a period span that starts from the Bronze Age & reaches World War II. The highlight & most recent section of the museum is located at the opposite & eastern side of the harbor, at the Moro docks where a full scale model of a Minoan ship that has even traveled from Chania to Piraeus once, is now on display. Combining the two separate parts of the museum you get a complete picture of Cretan & Greek naval history.
