Fisherman’s Bastion

The Fisherman’s Bastion is a fairy-tale-like part of the castle of Buda that has acquired a popularity of its own due to its beauty and breathtaking city views it provides. The world famous bastion looks like it sprang up from a tale about King Arthur but is in reality a relatively recent addition to the castle, built in the end of the 19th century (1895-1902).

When the bastion was added Budapest had left the warring days long past so it was actually designed in order to offer the citizens and visitors of the city with a beautiful platform of panoramic views that would pair up and supplement the splendour of Matthias Church. The architect Frigyes Schulek drew his inspiration by the Romanesque and Gothic architectural details found in Hungary and the outcome clearly vindicated his decision.

These days you can enjoy the splendid panoramic views of Budapest’s UNESCO World Heritage, the river Danube along with its historical sights, from the Fisherman’s Bastion. You can sit on the benches, hide in the arcades when it rains, snows or when the midday heat in summer time gets hard to bear. You can stand on the balconies free of charge, or you can enter the top turrets to get a bit higher, or to get some more privacy for a little romance or contemplation. You can play at siege on the long stairs, let the children count the seven chieftains of the Magyar tribes who founded Hungary, Magyarorszag in 895. More
