Pikk Street
Pikk street is the street that runs from Toompea Castle to the west, passes from the Suurgildi Square and ends at the edge of the Old Town, right before the water. This long street (in fact the word “Pikk” means long in Estonian) was the main route that connected the Castle town of Toompea to the Lower merchant town.
The oldest street in Tallinn is one that definitely requires a stroll or two. It is part of every guide, every tour of this city and for a good enough reason. The high-end medieval street is lined with some of the most historic buildings in the Old Part of Tallinn, like the 13th century Kanuti Gildi Hoone (St. Canute’s Guild Hall, Pikk 20) a modern dance theater today.
Τhe Mustpeade Maja (Pikk 26), the House of the Brotherhood of Black Heads, a merchant brotherhood of Livonia (Estonia & Latvia today) that was active from the mid 14th century up until the 1940’s. Today its four different halls house a gallery and three different concert venues.
