Stroopwafel

The Stroopwafel or syrup waffle was first made in the town of Gouda in the 18th century. Up to 1870 the Stroopwafel were only found in Gouda, in around 100 bakeries selling the treat in that city alone. Stroopwafel are basically two, still warm, freshly grilled thin waffles with a warm filling of syrup made from brown sugar, butter & cinnamon caramel as their connecting substance. Generous portions are sold as street food snack at one of the numerous food tracks around Amsterdam. It is a perfect pair of a “koffie verkeerd” (wrong coffee), which is basically an espresso with a lot (50/50 ratio) of steamed milk & froth.
