Musée National d’Ηistoire et d’Art

The narrow alleys of the neighborhood and the multitude of historic buildings house several institutions of national importance such as the Council of State of Luxembourg, the National Museum of History and Art or the Musée National d’Ηistoire et d’Art. This is a museum that deserves a separate mention.

The ancient part of the museum is consisted of a main building and several adjacent aristocratic mansions dating back to the 16th, 17th & 18th century. A new three level accruement of 700 square meters carved into the rock, under the Fish Market square, has been added in the mid 2000’s creating an assemblage of different buildings, in an alignment of rooms and exhibition spaces of a maze-like succession of small doorways,little bridges, split levels & wooden staircases.

The museum’s architectural diversity suits perfectly with its wide variety of collections ranging from the rich Roman and Celtic past of the country to medieval medals, coins and arms, decorative arts & furniture from 13th to 19th centuries and extensive art galleries on the top floors.It has also a contemporary art collection of both Luxembourgish and foreign artists with undeniable value.
