Birdcage Walk

St. Margaret’s Church is adjacent to Parliament Square where the statues of eminent statesmen including Winston Churchill & Nelson Mandela stand today. A short walk to the west of Parliament Square lies the south-eastern edge of St.James’s Park fringed by the Birdcage Walk, formerly known as the Prince’s street which connects Westminster Abbey with Buckingham Palace.

Named after the Royal Aviary established on the site during King James I‘s reign (1603-1625) to house the royal hunting falcons & hawks. For 200 years, only members of the royal family and the Hereditary Grand Falconer were allowed to ride alongside the Aviary in carriages. All others had to walk (hence the name).
