Bacalhau
Bacalhau. Portugal’s national dish is undoubtedly Bacalhau which means dried, salted cod. Since the early days of the 16th century Portugal’s seamen used this method to preserve their catch on their long voyages & it has been since then a necessity & a culinary tradition.
It is said that are 365 variations in the cooking of Bacalhau, one for each day of the year. The most popular in Lisbon is Bacalhau à Brás with chopped onions, potatoes & eggs, decorated with olives & parsley. Another popular recipe, more urban & favorite among the young Portuguese is Bacalhau com natas (Cod with Cream).
