Ärtsoppa
Ärtsoppa (Split pea soup) is a popular soup in Sweden, that has been around in the country since at least the 1200s. This traditional Swedish Pea Soup is prepared from fast-growing yellow peas, chopped onion, marjoram, thyme, and salted pork. In reality, the soup was consumed since the time of the Vikings and was especially popular among poor people.
After Sweden was converted to Catholicism, Ärtsoppa became the traditional dish for Thursday dinner, because at that day the servants took their leave and the soup was easy and quick to prepare.Even nowadays it is eaten on Thursday dinner with brown mustard and crisp or hard-crusted bread. Ärtsoppa with pork was the favorite dish of the writer August Strindberg. More
