Vasa Museum
The Vasa Museum is a maritime museum located on the island of Djurgården displaying the only intact 17th-century warship that sank after sailing about 1300 meters into her maiden voyage on August 1628. After the salvation of its valuable bronze cannons in the 17th century, the ship fell into obscurity until it was salvaged in 1961 & put in Vasa Museum in 1987.
The museum opened in 1990 & is since then, been the most visited museum in Scandinavia. Around the ship are numerous exhibits and models portraying the construction, the sinking, the location, and the recovery of the ship. Some exhibits expand on the history of Sweden in the 17th century, providing background information on the reasons the ship was built in the first place. A movie theatre shows a film in alternating languages on the recovery of the Vasa. The museum also features four other museum ships moored in the harbor outside. More
