Explore the Zuid. During the Spanish occupation of the 16th century a citadel was built south of the city center near the river Scheldt. Used to control the city by all occupying armies from then on it wasn’t until 40 years after the Belgian declaration of independence that a new neighborhood started to develop around it.

Planned carefully by the city’s authorities the t Zuid  (south) district which was designed in the place of the star-shaped fortress, was done so in the “Parisian manner ” with wide streets & squares as well as a cohesive architectural & building pattern.

Today in the t Zuid one will find many of the city’s landmarks like the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art,  the Museum of Photography,  the neo-baroque Zuiderperhuis once a power station now a multifunctional cultural powerhouse, the Hollandse Synagoge, the Schelde Vrij Monument in Marnix square, the Porta Regia triumphal arch designed by Rubens & numerous restaurants & cafes where you can relax in between.
