Casa de Murillo

This house, the Casa de Murillo, is located at number 8 Calle Santa Teresa, in the parish of Santa Cruz, and was the artist’s penultimate family residence. In it Murillo lived as a painter fully recognized and admired by the Sevillian society of the moment and in it was located the workshop where the artist worked the last years of his life.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, considered “the best painter in Seville” by the Cabildo of the Seville Cathedral, developed his vital and creative career in full in his hometown, where he was born in 1617 and died in 1682; just a brief stay of a few months at the Madrid court, in 1658, took him away from the Andalusian capital. These circumstances, together with his exceptional talent and extreme sensitivity, influenced Murillo’s ability to capture with his painting, like no other artist, the spirit of the Seville of his time.

The Casa de Murillo responds to the Sevillian house-palace typology, with two floors and an attic, whose rooms are arranged around a central patio with four galleries and semicircular arches on columns. The building, declared a Site of Cultural Interest on March 8, 1995, has undergone numerous interventions, especially during the 20th century; However, during the Murillo Year it has once again been the artist’s home, a space in which through reproductions of his works, cultural activities and workshops, it will be possible to meet the artist’s brilliant creative personality.

The Casa de Murillo is also the starting point of the Itinerary In the Footsteps of Murillo that will guide visitors on a journey through Seville in the seventeenth century, following in the artist’s footsteps through the most emblematic places of his career. The Itinerary is made up of 20 spaces linked to Murillo’s personal and professional life, in which more than 50 original paintings and more than 80 reproductions of his most relevant works can be seen. We invite you to follow in Murillo’s footsteps and discover the creative personality of an exceptional artist.
