Built-in the 15th century as part of the ramparts on the site of an old defensive gate to celebrate the conquest of the kingdom of Naples by King Charles VIII, this triumphal arch / defensive gate of Cailhau Gate is a Disney-like tower leading to the Saint-Pierre District squeezed between the buildings that surround it today was one of the gates of the old city.

Taking its name from the word cailloux means the stones unloaded from the ships which docked nearby since this was the gate between the docks & the Place du Palais. Inside this theatrical triumphal arch dedicated to Charles VIII is an exhibition on the history & urban development of Bordeaux & on the top floor a view over the Garonne River & Pont de Pierre.
