MuseumsQuartier

Where the two milestone museums end a new section of art shrines known as the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) begins. The MuseumsQuartier consists of about 70 (!) cultural facilities making it one of the largest art & culture complexes in the world today.

Historic buildings from the 18th & 19th centuries are incorporated into a single architectural entity along with museums of modern architecture.

The two main institutions of the quarter are the MUMOK (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien) & the Leopold Museum. The 4800 m² cubics of MUMOK are clad in anthracite basalt lava. It is today the largest museum for modern & contemporary art in Central Europe. A collection that spans from Classic Modernism to Pop art, present-day film & media art. Under its roof, one can marvel at works by artists like Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol or even Yoko Ono.

The contrasting white limestone cubic building of the Leopold Museum, considered a treasure trove of Viennese Art Nouveau & expressionism consists of the works that had been accumulated by the passionate art lover Dr.Rudolf Leopold during the 20th century.
