Méchelskierch

Heading towards the Bock tunnels and looking to the left side one can easily spot the high spire of Méchelskierch aka Églse Saint-Michel church, the oldest place of worship in the city. The first church on this site was built in 987 as the castle’s chapel by the first Count and founder of the city Siegfried I, very close to the junction of the two Roman roads that formed the city’s first market (Fëschmaart/Fish Market).

The church was destroyed several times in the past but was always reconstructed due to its historical significance. Its present appearance dates to 1688 when it was renovated after it was damaged by the troops of Louis XIV in a blend of Romanesque & Baroque architectural styles. The impressive Baroque altar by B. Namur inside is definitely worth a look.
