St. Margaret’s Church

A breath away from Westminster Abbey, the impressive church. St. Margaret’s Church  also founded by the Benedictine monks in the twelfth century. The church was built so that the people who lived around the Abbey can receive all the sacraments & ministrations of the church without disturbing the monks.

Most noteworthy feature, its exquisite stained glass windows. The one to the west commemorates Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618), whose voyages of exploration during the reign of Elizabeth I led to the establishment of Virginia, one of the earliest settlements in America. Raleigh was executed for treason only a few yards away from the east wall of the church at the Old Palace Yard and was buried inside the chancel. The stained glass to the east commemorates the marriage of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon & is considered one of the finest of the period before the reformation in London.
