Place du Parlement

The Place du Parlement, initially Place du Marché Royal, during the years of revolution Marché de la Liberté it finally took the name of the once powerful Parliament of Bordeaux seated in the Palais d l’Ombrière in 1462 until it was dissolved in 1790. The square was created as a link between the river & port and the city & its businesses in 1760.

Lined with 18th century buildings, the square is a showcase of the architecture built under Tourny. There are harmonious and uniform facades, cut stone from Gironde, sculpted mascarons on the keystones of the windows (human figure carved in stone with an original apotropaic function), wrought iron balustrades, as well as shear lines. and semi-circular arches. The buildings therefore offer a beautiful retrospective of the baroque and rocaille style, also called the rococo style. The set responds to the classical ideal with an architectural unity. Only one building, at the corner of rue Pas-Saint-Georges, breaks with the beautiful unity.

Parliament Square is therefore a very pretty place to stroll in the heart of the city center. You will be able to take advantage of the setting on the terrace of the restaurants. It is a favorite place to contemplate the architectural details of the facades.
